Naya Kanga Peak Climbing – Introduction to climbing for strong walkers

The Naya Kanga Peak Climbing Trek is one of our shortest expeditions offering an excellent introduction to climbing in the Himalaya. It is suitable for the strong walker who is familiar with the use of an ice axe and crampons.

The Langtang is a more remote trekking region close to the Tibetan border just north of Kathmandu. We acclimatize by climbing Yala Peak at 5,500 m before moving onto our main objective Naya Kanga at 5,846 m, one of Nepal’s most shapely trekking peaks. The views from the summit are superb including the 8,000 m giant Shishapangma.

Day 11 – Naya Kanga Climb

Naya Kanga route is almost 900m long with approach of about 450m. We will get up at midnight with the objective to leave the camp at 1am. After 20 minutes crossing rock fall we reach the start of the approach with 6m high chimney between glacier and a rock face; we will use jammers to climb through the chimney and follow right side shoulder to avoid avalanche prone snow face, which will take us about 2 hours to the start of the climb.

The climb is along steep 45-50° snow slope, often with knee deep snow, so it can be hard going for about 3-4 hours to the summit. The summit forms long 100m wide knife-edge snow ridge and we should have time to cross the ridge weather and snow condition permitting, it will be exciting part of the climb.

10-11am is our turn back time because the weather changes usually after 11am. What took us 5 hours on the way up it will take us only just over 90 minutes or less to down climb and repel through the chimney. We will pack-up our high camp and return to the Base Camp.

The view from the summit is truly amazing on all the peaks of Langtang Valley as well as many peaks in Tibet including 8027m Shishapangma with its tremendous 2000m south face, the only 8000m peak fully within Tibet.
